The EV tipping point: Zaptec's vision for 2025 and beyond

By: Kurt Østrem, CEO of Zaptec.

2024 has been a year of ups and downs for the EV industry. As we reach year-end, it’s clear that the sector is at a turning point – caught between short-term challenges and long-term potential. The drop in Q3 EV sales across parts of Europe (36% in Germany, 20% in France) raised serious questions about market stability and consumer demand. However, industry shifts often follow such patterns.

For Zaptec, this slowdown was not solely a challenge – it was an opportunity to focus even more on innovation and adaptability. We see industry turbulence as a necessary recalibration. Infrastructure, regulations, and consumer behaviours need to mature to create a sustainable ecosystem in Europe as a whole. By staying focused on what we can control, Zaptec is readying itself for a strong 2025.

The adoption curve: How market slumps shape technological evolution

Technological shifts rarely follow a straight path. History has taught us that major innovations often face periods of doubt and slower adoption. The recent drop in EV sales fits this pattern, sparking scepticism and sensational headlines. Yet, it is precisely these moments that shape industry leaders and drive transformation. Or, to say it more poetically: In the harshest droughts, only the deepest roots survive.

At Zaptec, we have continued to expand our presence through consistent growth in installations, and we gain market shares even during this market slowdown. This isn’t by chance; it is the result of reading market signals, anticipating needs, and delivering reliable, localised solutions.

Zaptec’s edge: bridging local needs and global perspectives

Success in the EV market requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. The upcoming launch of the Zaptec Go 2, specifically developed with Central Europe in mind, highlights our commitment to providing solutions tailored to regional needs. By understanding and adapting to local regulations, charging preferences, and infrastructure readiness, we create products that integrate seamlessly into diverse markets.

It is important to emphasize that our focus on Central European specifications will pave the way for solutions that benefit all of Europe. This broader impact reflects the advantage of Zaptec’s expansive perspective, as we operate in 18 of Europe’s 20 largest EV markets. There are positives and negatives in every market. Lessons to be learned.

Forces shaping the future of mobility

The EV market’s direction will be shaped by regulatory shifts, technological progress, and consumer incentives. Stricter EU CO₂ targets and ongoing improvements in battery technology are making EVs more practical and accessible to a wider audience.

Zaptec sees these changes as opportunities to lead. By constantly refining our products to align with evolving standards and user needs, we contribute to accelerating sustainable transport. Recent government measures, like Germany’s EV tax incentives, further boost market growth, and we’re prepared to support this momentum with innovation and strategic focus.

EVs as power banks and energy assets

EVs are more than just vehicles; they are mobile energy assets capable of reshaping how we produce and consume power. Since vehicles in the European fleet are parked for around 95% of their lifetime, they offer significant potential as energy storage units. Zaptec is leading efforts to make this a reality through solutions for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration and dynamic load management.

As battery technology continues to evolve, EVs can store excess energy from renewable sources, balance grid demand, or power homes during peak usage. This evolution not only makes owning an EV more practical but also supports a more resilient and adaptable energy system for all.

Overcoming resistance to change

Adopting new technology is never straightforward. Cultural ties to traditional vehicles, loss aversion, and resistance to change can slow EV adoption. Zaptec understands that overcoming these barriers requires more than advanced products – it demands empathy, collaboration, and outreach.

We engage with consumers, installers, and policymakers to build trust and highlight the tangible benefits of our solutions. By focusing on education and genuine engagement, we aim to ease the transition to EVs for everyone.

Building a greener, smarter future

Zaptec’s vision goes beyond creating individual products; it’s about reshaping how we live, travel, and use energy.

Achieving this vision calls for bold thinking, strong partnerships, and unwavering commitment. Though challenges lie ahead, Zaptec stands ready to lead the way toward a cleaner, smarter, more connected future.
